Rock/Creek UpChuck 50k Takes 60 Participants Along Cumberland Trail

The Rock/Creek UpChuck 50k is the most unique Rock/Creek Trail Series Race offered in Chattanooga. Growing in its popularity, this race is capped at 60 elite runners from around the world. Ten different states, plus Australia, were represented this year and each participant was required to submit an application for acceptance. New for 2010, race hopefuls were encouraged to submit a video.

Access points along the trail are few and only the most dedicated of runners are witness to the region’s brutal trail descents and climbs. Benefiting local non-profits, this year’s race was a success and offered podium finishes to runners representing Tennessee, Australia, Connecticut and Colorado.

Matt Davies from Cleveland, TN with a time of 5:13:20 and First Place Overall followed shortly by Second Place Overall Brian Williams from Knoxville, TN with a time of 5:31:31. Third Place Overall is Amstein Prytz from Wulguru, Australia came in Third Place Overall with a time of 5:32:15.

The Top finishing women are:
First Place Women’s Division is Debbie Livingston from Bolton, CT with a time of 5:39:05. Debbie has now established a new course record from the results recorded from previous years. The second fastest time belongs to Sally Booking from Marietta, GA back in 2009 with a time of 6:30:48.
Second Place Women’s goes to Rock/Creek Race Team Member, Natalie Sims from Signal Mountain, TN with a time of 5:46:08, and Third Place Women’s goes to Ashley Arnold from Carbondale, CO with a time of 5:59:51.

upchuck_IMG_4858The origins of the UpChuck 50k has a simple and humble beginning. Two friends and Rock/Creek Race Team Members, Chad Wamack and Matt Sims, were out on a run. One became terribly sick and proceeded to “loose his lunch”. Ever since that time, their mileage and trail run has been deemed the UpChuck 50k. Continuing with its low impact, grassroots nature, the UpChuck remains Rock/Creek’s paperless, low key race. The terrain will quickly test a participant’s stomach strength, and although it is not the most favorite result among the runners, some will upchuck.
For some, this year, it was a goal to achieve an “UpChuck trifecta” as stated by race participant Anne Giuliano. She expressed her interest in completing a trifect of sorts in her ultra marathons by completing the Helena Ultra Running Leagues [HURL], Billings Athletic Running Federation [BARF], and now the Rock/Creek UpChuck 50k.
