Accompanying this year’s Outdoor Expo + Gear Swap is the kick off for the Rock/Creek, Greenlife & 2 North Shore Complex “Shoes for Haiti” donation drive.
Starting Saturday, April 10th, but continuing through May 16, 2010,
Outdoor Expo goers, gear swappers, and booth previewers are encouraged to bring their gently used shoes to donate at the Greenlife tent area near the Theater Center. The emphasis for Saturday, is to collect outgrown and gently used children’s shoes.
Following this event, from Sunday, April 11 through Sunday, May 16, the Chattanooga community will be able to drop off gently used shoes for all ages at participating stores in the 2 North Shore Shopping Complex located in North Chattanooga at 301 Manufacturers Road.
The need in Haiti is overwhelming but several local Chattanooga businesses have united their efforts to support existing Haiti relief work.
Benefiting from the Shoes for Haiti Donation Drive are long established Haitian relief projects:
“The Advantage Program” whose mission is to fit amputees with new prosthesis limbs along with a pair of shoes, and the
“Children’s Nutrition Program” whose goal is to establish sustainable methods for health education to local mothers and caregivers for the prevention of children’s malnutrition.
You donations are helping to increase supplies of a simple safeguard. Shoes protect children against parasites and other deadly diseases which become more prevalent in the coming soggy rainy season.
Both organizations have doctors and representatives local to Chattanooga who have been working with the Haitian community for years before this most recent tragedy. Their need is urgent, and with no easy fixes to a problem of this magnitude, every effort from our Chattanooga community is helpful. Please consider joining us in this effort.
