Rock/Creek & Wild Trails announce challenge grant for damaged Lula Lake Land Trust bridge

Today, Rock/Creek &announced a new “challenge grant” for the Chattanooga trail running community.

“We need to fully rebuild the bridge over Rock Creek at the Lula Lake core property,” said Salomon Rock/Creek Trail Series race director Randy Whorton, “and we need to do it quickly.” The bridge, located in Lookout Mountain, GA, was washed away by a flash flood during a recent spring storm.

Wild Trails kicked off the reconstruction with a $2,000 donation, helping place a temporary bridge for use during last weekend’s Chattanooga Mountains Stage Race, and now turns to the community in order to raise the additional $2,000 required to permanently improve this bridge.

“If you’ve ever used this property, you know how beautiful it is and what a treasure we have right outside of Chattanooga. Please help with a donation today. Anything will help!” said Mark McKnight. Mark is a board member for the non-profit and Rock/Creek’s Marketing Director. “(With race day coming up) we went ahead with it and planned to ask for public financial support later. We’re challenging the runners and the outdoor community to match our donation.”

The new plan calls for a 52′ nail-laminated, longitudinal-span bridge. This design was developed by the USFS for long, clear spans in the backcountry or remote areas. Lula Lake Land Trust staff, including Land Manager Noel Durant, and a variety of local volunteers will handle the construction.

“We’re raising the footings of the bridge, and the new materials will have improved durability over the previous bridge,” Durant says. “We’d like to give a big thanks to the running community, and of course Rock/Creek for their support on this project.”

To donate, send checks to Lula Lake Land Trust, PO Box 395, Lookout Mtn. TN 37350 (with “bridge replacement” in the memo line) or donate online at (click “Make a Donation”).
