Correctly Packing and Carrying Your Deuter Pack

For maximum carrying comfort it is important to pack the load and adjust the backpack correctly. The sleeping bag belongs in the bottom compartment, heavy items close to the back. Small items are conveniently placed in the top lid so they are quickly accessible. For easiest carrying, try to place the centre of gravity over the middle of the shoulders.

For adjusting the back system, it is best to place a realistic load in the backpack.
1) First loosen all straps. Shoulder the backpack, position the hip belt and tighten. In doing so the middle of the hip belt should lie over the hip bones, not above because it could constrict the stomach.

2) Tighten the shoulder straps, however not too much because the hip belt should carry most of the load.

3) On backpacks with the Deuter Vari-Quick System, a quick and effective back length adjustment system, check the position of the shoulder straps. The mounting point of the grey stabiliser straps should lie over your collar bone.

4) To adjust this position simply undo the Vari-Quick VELCROŽ brand closure and thread the VELCROŽ brand strap through 4 suitable attachment loops. Tighten the VELCROŽ brand strap and fix the VELCROŽ brand closure. With correct adjustment, the shoulder straps will follow the curve of your shoulders.

5) Then tighten the hip belt stabiliser straps, also tension the shoulder stabiliser straps to pull the load closer to your back and your centre of gravity. Tighter adjustment for rugged terrain and looser adjustment for easy terrain or better ventilation.

6) Finally, close the sternum strap to improve the fit of the shoulder straps.
