Sure they are a bit heavy and pricey but worth every penny/dollar or more. In an ultra with tough rocky terrain this is the shoe you want. Run all day in these and you can feel confident that at least your feet will be up to the task of doing the same the next day.One of my all time favorite shoes.

These are phenomenal trail shoes... lightweight and great grip, yet still able to perform and cushion on hard surfaces (like asphalt and rock).

The unique tightening system makes the shoe grab onto your foot for comfort and support - kind of like Chaco sandals.

This shoe is well designed for rugged trail running. It doesn't allow water in easily and it dries quickly. The shoe seems to wear at a normal rate - the cushioning going out before the tread. I do find this shoe to be a little too heavy for racing, but fine for training. I only got one blister while running in them and I usually put in 20 to 26 miles at a time. The draw-string concept is nice and works fine.

This shoe is built sturdy to take trail punishment, and the agressive tread grips in snow and ice. The trade off is that it is not as comfortable as I thought it would be. I am a heavy runner and like a bit more cushing, so I inserted a gel orthotic in mine.

On a backpacking trip i used my XT wings and was pleasantly surprised. I hiked nine miles in these shoes the first day, with a 28lb pack. The weather was rainy and the trail was sloppy. We hiked fast and hard only stopping once to take a break. Never once did my feet give me any problems. The next day we hiked out, my pack weighed around 25lbs. The sky was still gloomy and the rain turned to snow. On the hike back i encountered numerous obstacles; rain, ice, mud, and slick rocks. It was so cold i ended up running with my pack on to catch up with my group. I ran approx. 2 miles with my pack on. My shoes never gave me any problems. Once finished i was in great spirits my feet felt great and the snow was coming down like crazy. What a trip. All in all, i was very impressed with these shoes. I bought them for road running/trail running and now i have a great shoe for any venture. I was very please with my purchase.

I have a very neutral foot plant and arch and therefore have mostly taken a rather "don't care" attitude towards running shoes. It is safe to say that I am only a trail runner. The one thing that I do like about the typical road shoe is the extra cushion that you get. Obviously motion control is critical for a good trail shoe and cushioned shoes are typically poor at motion control... until now. The Solomon XT Wings have built a shoe with both components better than any other. I started the Vermont 100 in these shoes with the plan to change out of them at mile 60, the other shoes stayed in the bag. Still steady and soft in them at the end tells me that they have made the perfect trail shoe for those of us that live for the rugged trails but also enjoy some extra cushion when we land.
