Comments about Mountain Hardwear Clouds Rest 5 Sleeping Bag:
After freezing for three nights (low teens each night, camp at 12,500ft) on a camping trip to Pomery Lakes near Mt Princeton, CO in September I decided it was time for a new bag. I have had great luck with Mountain Hardwear products in the past and this bag was certainly no exception.
The shell is extremely water resistant when new. I let the bag sit out on my deck in a light rainshower for a few hours to test it out. I was checking it regularly as I wanted to see how well it stood up, but I did NOT want my new bag saturated with rain water. Happily when I brought it inside the water was still beading off of it and there were no signs of the bag leaking anywhere. It is too early to tell how well that will hold up over time, but the intial impression is very positive. I performed the same test with my older bag which did claim to be water resistant and within minutes it had begun to saturate.
I am extremely impressed with the construction of this bag, the shell material, the zippers, stitching, everything is extremely solid and looks like it will hold up to years of use.
My first trip out was a two day camp at roughly 8,000ft, middle of November in Southern Colorado. I was extremely aprehensive, the last trip was miserable at night and overnight temps were going to be in the single digits. All my wory was for naught though, the first night out I woke up and unzipped the vents in my tent because I was too warm!
I would recomend you get the tall bag if you are much over 5'10". I am 6'1" and the large fits me like a glove but if it were any smaller I would have been cramped and unable to lay straight.
My only two complaints with the bag so far is that it did not come with a compression sack (For the price this is really nit-picking though) and that while the zipper area is lined with a heavier fabric it is still fairly easy to snag. The heavier fabric does a great job but the thinner inner material likes to get in the way of the zipper if you are not careful, I find that using two hands and leading with one hand in front of the zipper to move the inner liner out of the path works well. Again a very minor annoyance considering the overall value.
All in All an excellent bag. There are certainly lighter bags out there, and there are certainly warmer bags, but for an inexpensive all around bag Three Season/Light Four Season that will very likely serve you well for years to come I can't say enough good about this bag and Mountain Hardwear products in general.
Still beading up after hours in the rain
