Brand: Vibram FiveFingers
Located in: Shoes, Sandals
The  Vibram FiveFingers KSO Barefoot Shoe is one of the most innovative products to come out in a couple years.  The Barefoot shoe is based on the age old concept that being barefoot helps your balance, your connection with the earth and energy, and gives you the ability to move in a more natural, healthy way.

The KSO is designed to "Keep Stuff Out" with its abrasion resistant stretch polyamide and breathable stretch mesh that wraps your entire forefoot to keep out gravel, grit, mud and other possible irritants.  A single hook and loop closure helps secure your foot in the shoe giving you the ability to scramble up steep slopes or hop down river cobbles.

By walking in a protective sleeve over your feet, encased in sticky, protective Vibram rubber, the FiveFingers KSO stimulates the muscles in your feet and lower legs to build strength and improve range of motion.  Many people who use these shoes have said they had a better sense of balance, greater agility, and visibly improved posture.

Constructed with a non marking Vibram TC1 performance rubber sole, and a thin abrasion resistant stretch polyamide fabric that fits low on the foot for comfort and quick drying.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

I use my KSOs whenever I can get away with it. I like them for the summer months, when the pavement gets too hot for my bare feet. It's nice to be able to wiggle your toes but be confident that glass won't slow you down too much.
There's no support of any kind; but now that I've gotten used to it I find it hard to buy any other shoe. They seem too bulky and coddling compared to bare feet or KSOs.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

Tried the KSO's out in a local store. 41 fit too tight on my little toes. Tried a 42 in a Bikila and felt better. Went ahead and ordered 42's for the KSO's. The little toes seemed fine but my Big toe went all the way.

The length of the toe sleezes are to be somewhat desirable. The strap pushes my foot forward, leaving some room in the heal and no room on my big toe.

Does not fit like a glove as expected, but after a few wears, kind of get used to it. It does not necessarily break in.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

I am a runner and a crossfit junkie. I have had the KSO for 6 months now. I have ran 13 miles at one time in these. I would suggest, as many other do, to start out low miles first. I actual took a minute off my 5k PR by training in these KSO. You learn to lean forward and run on the balls and sides of your feet the way sprinters do. They aren't the best for trail running with a lot of small gravel, but you still can do it. As for crossfit, these are perfect for training and doing Olympic lifting. I have only one down side to the KSO and that is your feet sweat badly. I used anti-perspirant deodorant on my feet to help. You can also try Injinji socks to help that, but overall they are the best all round shoe ever. Join the hype, get a pair. I have several friends that already have.

I run 3 miles a few times a week. 9-10 minute / mile pace. 43 years old. 6'0" 240lbs. These are the first "barefoot" type running shoes I've ever owned. After a ~2 months of use, the early calf pain is gone and my knees don't hurt anymore. This used to be a chronic problem. Now they feel fine after each run.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

I haven't worn these for workouts, but have used them for working around the house and out camping/boating. They are quite fascinating to wear in that they are comfortable, yet strikingly unusual to see when you look down at your feet. Like I said in the title they are "kinda fun". One note on fitting: while the fitting charts seem right on, the shape of the "bare foot" is somewhat average. My feet are slightly different from the norm and one toe on my left foot gets a little bit squeezed after wearing them for a long period of time (all day). Before buying, I would recommend trying them on and wearing them around for a while to ensure the proper fit.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

My boyfriend and I wear our Vibrams everywhere. The only place we found we need the vibrams treks was in heavy trail hiking. We read that they have more protection for your feet. We enjoy water sports, hiking, running, walking. Pretty much any activity or place we go we are wearing our KSOs or have them in the bag. I don't leave home without them.

I should be a spokesperson for Vibrams. The feeling of actually getting to use your toes for balance and support is amazing. You can feel your feet, ankles, and calves getting stronger. It is the most natural feeling ever! Also you dont get weighed down when you where them in the water. So much easier to swim and move through the water!

I also read online how now days our toes are pushed together which causes all kinds of posture and health problems. I have noticed that since I have bought my Vibrams that my right hip no longer aches from moving in and out of place, and my lower back does not have as much pain. This would make sense since our feet are our foundation, and Vibrams allow our twos to function properly. I could go on and on about these shoes. I love the KSO's for my outdoor activities for keeping out the dirt. I will be purchasing at least a pair of Classics for everyday and either Flows or Treks for heavy trekking and winter months.

My family has ordered multiple pairs of Vibrams, and Rock Creek was by far my favorite place to purchase from.

I got these to run (which I like them in) but on a recent road trip (Massachusetts to Oklahoma and back) I found they are the MOST COMFORTABLE thing I've ever worn while driving a car. I kept 'em on all week; quite a conversation piece. My seven year old nephew was jealous. My advice: get sized first. I did, and they fit like a glove (literally).

These are great shoes. I have always had a problem rolling my ankles. I started with these shoes slowly, just like they tell you to. I now only wear these when I am walkng around as well as working out and running. I am currently deployed and wear PT clothes when not in uniform, so I spend about 6 hours a day in these for normal walking as well as all exercise activities. My ankles are stronger and I roll my annkles a lot less now and getting better all the time. I am already planning on buying a second pair.

Rock Creek Outfitters Response: We are glad the KSO's are doing the trick for your ankle strength- Thank you for your service.

Thousands of years ago, humans didn't have running shoes, and we don't need them now. I originally bought some 41s and found them a little tight on my pinky toe. Soaking them in water helped, but I still got blisters (this is normal at first). I ordered a pair of 42s and they were much roomier, but the blisters continue to this very day. And you know what? Who cares! Running, training and climbing barefoot gives you a sense of freedom unmatched by any ridiculous technological marvel. Oh yeah, and say goodbye to your running injuries. I can't remember the last time I had this much fun monkeyin' around!

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

Took much longer than expected to put on the first time, and the big toe pockets felt too narrow. After a few times wearing them, they stretched just enough; now they fit perfectly, and I can get them on in a few seconds.

I am slowly getting into running with them, not up to a mile yet. Calf muscles were sore after first run over a half-mile. Wear them for regular errands, weightlifting and cardio in the gym, and biking to work.

The only issue now is the sockless nature of wearing them. After a day in them, they smell terrible. Just about have to put in the wash daily. Hope they handle it well long-term.

These fit great once I got the right size. Black/Black seem to run small compared to size chart. I ordered what I thought I needed based on measuring but actually ended up needing next size up. Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

They're an awesome product. Ease your way into them though, be cautious. I started running in them daily from the start and developed a bruised bone in my foot. You have to condition your feet to the experience, especially if you're running long distances outdoors. Also, be careful with the seams, they can rip easily; my toes had holes in them after three weeks of running.

They're a fantastic product, but they need to evolve into a more sturdy design. I noticed that I was getting much more out of my runs, my calfs were getting incredible workouts, even small muscles in my feet and toes were getting some.

These are great. Those of you interested in running with the Vibram Five Fingers should begin lightly and carefully, as you'll need to develop previously unused muscles in your feet.

I take these with me when I go rock climbing. Not to climb in, but to wear when I am belaying, or rock hopping from site to site. They are extremely comfortable & provide excellent traction that makes you feel like a mountain goat. They're also great for weight lifting or any other sport that requires agility, flexibility and balance. I'd highly recommend these for most outdoor activities.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

Fantastic product that has truly revolutionized the way I run for the better. The lack of arch has positively influenced the growth and development of the muscles, tendons, and ligaments of my feet, as well as the rest of my legs. This combined with the lack of cushion has caused me to begin running as humans are designed to, without a heel strike. Road running was uncomfortable at first, but the more I ran in the Vibrams, the more comfortable it became due to my running style changing for the better. I highly recommend these shoes! Also great for Olympic lifting and powerlifting, as I felt like I had better balance and control over my body. I've even golfed in them and improved my game (possibly due to balance issues). One warning: you WILL be sore for the first week or so running in them, as it works the muscles in your feet and calves much more than "normal" running will. POSE running is better though, so get on it!

These shoes are great. This is my second pair. The first ones were nice but about a half size too small. They are true to fit but they are also exact. Take the time to take the chart provided and measure the shoes. I have run in these and love to walk. I would not run long distances but for speed work..nothing beats them. The KSO's do exactly as advertised they...Keep Stuff Out. I highly recommend taking a walk on the wild side with these shoes...

He absolutely loves the shoes for his gym workouts, primarily lifting weights such as Squats. He loves to run in which he likes the way the shoes are re-training his running style. An overall excellent purchase!

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

I bought the KSOs especially for water activities and they do not disappoint! They feel great in the water - like swimming barefoot, but give you the added padding and protection from the elements. I've only owned them for about a month so far, so I'm undecided on durability - but they seem to be very well crafted. They do take a little bit of getting used to - especially the little and ring toes being so separated, but once your feet get used to it, they start to feel very comfortable. I've also worn them on the beach and they feel great in the sand, the only thing is that the sand gets inside (but what shoe doesn't have that problem)? A quick wash and they're good to go!

These shoes are great! It's taken a couple of months to be able to run in these in proper form and finally have my calves stop hurting from the barefoot running style, but I feel great when I run in them. These shoes are extremely comfortable without socks but I do occasionally wear the Injinji socks, which are also great. I use these shoes for everything (walking, running, yoga, strength training). I am actually going to buy a pair of classic VFFs because I use my KSOs too much![...]

I wore my new kso's around the house a couple of days( yea got made fun of by the older people). Then came the test.I went on a 12 mile kayaking trip. My group stopped at every swimming hole on the way down the river and swam. I walked on gravel, sand, large rocks, mud, moss, you name it. The shoes never flinched. I really noticed them shine when climbing a very large boulder to jump from the top into the water( dozen or so times). I hate swimming in shoes peroid, but these are great. I did not notice any resitance at all. Dont get me wrong they could fall apart the next time I put them on but so far ohh so sweet. Only time will tell about the durability. If they last the rest of this summer I am sold.

I bought these primarily for the gym since I like to squat and deadlift barefoot but I know most gyms aren't cool with that practice. Well, I received my pair last night (Thanks, Rock Creek!!!) and I took them for a quick run down the street. They felt great - it's hard to describe but it really felt good to run. Mind you, I've been healing an injured ankle and I really didn't feel any pain. It may be the change in stride - I don't know but they definitely pass the first test. My coworkers think I'm crazy, though... :)

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

They take some major getting used to. I needed some new running shoes, was doing some research and came across barefoot running. looking into it, I liked what I saw, however I didn't want to have my foot completely without armor. I took a gamble on these and haven't looked back. I LOVE them. I actually look forward to running, and I want to go faster with these on. It truly is enjoyable to run again. Give them a chance, and give them time, because it does take time to get your feet and legs/calves used to them. I got blisters at first, then they healed and my feet hardened up some and now no problems. But if blisters are a problem or reoccurring, there are socks you can get for them. I have to wear the socks in order to use them in official PT gear, and they are comfortable. take them or leave them, socks add some additional comfort. As for the arch, I am fairly flat footed. At first, my arch was sore. Then the muscle/tendons got stronger, it isn't a problem now. Oh and another thing, I had popped my ankle real bad on a hike . After 6 months, I still couldn't stretch my ankle to the outside without tension and pain. after a month of running with these babies, all the muscles/tendons in my ankles and feet strengthened up and my injured ankle is 110%. THESE SHOES ARE GREAT!

I purchased these after trying to run barefoot. I found that barefoot running on grass really helped my PF and shin splints but I didn't have the calluses needed to run like that on the road so I got the VFFs. I had been running 3-5 miles with shoes and was able to quickly build back up to that with the VFFs. Your feel and calves WILL feel sore for a while if you are just starting out running in these. I also wear them around the house and working in the yard.

Based on the recommendation of one of my employees who works out frequently, I purchased the shoes for my 18 year old son. He loves them so much that he now wears them to school almost every day. He was the only kid who didn't have tired feet during Senior Night at Disney (that's an all nighter, in case you didn't know). For Floirda weather, he does recommend toe socks. My 22 year old asked me to buy him a pair; I told him to get a job (he is in college) and buy his own!

I use my Vibram KSOs for everything from walking to classes to running a 5K. I just completed a triathlon in my KSOs and I felt light as a feather. My only advice is to take it easy with them for the first few months to let your feet and calves get strong enough to handle the extra stress.

I recently completed a 12K race in my Vibram KSO's (Bloomsday in Spokane, WA). I experienced no problems regarding fit or wear. Knees, hips, and back all felt fine, and there were no next day aches and pains. It takes some time to get used to the lack of cushioning. I am convinced that these are a good alternative to conventional shoes.

Initial fit was about a half-size too small, so ordered a 43 after starting with a 42 as recommended by the US/Europe conversion table...it turned out to be a blessing in disguise, I got the opportunity to grab a pair of the blue camos...snug fit, nice feel from the onset...took them for a mile and a half trot after warming up to them a couple days. I have flat feet, impact was a small issue, but besides the fact I ran on asphalt, it wasn't something I didn't expect. Love the feel, great fit and performance. Gave them 4 stars due to the fact that the shoes have multiple uses and huge potential.

Bottom Line:

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

You'll notice that the pro's section states-"no shock absorption" and so do the cons. You should also note the caution in the title of this review. When I first ordered the five-fingers, I wanted the black ones, which I got, but even with the recommended measuring and chart, they were still just a hair too tight in the big toe. So I sold that very desirable color on[...] for more than I bought it for and dealt with the less desirable color (blue camouflage) and still have a fantastic bit of footwear. Now to the Caution and the point. These are what you want. They simulate barefoot running very well. This style, however, will not protect your foot from sharp pebbles on hard surfaces (think packed gravel road). They also have no shock absorption, which is both good and bad. Shock absorption in running shoes is probably why almost all running shoes cause "drive train" injuries in athletes, and why the barefoot running phenomenon is returning. The caution is this: Even though I ran for 2 weeks building up from one mile to 3 miles, 2-3 days a week, on the third week (because I had no pain anymore in my heel and knee and hip) I took off feeling light and great, only to finish a 4.5 mile run with a stress fracture in my 2nd and 3rd metatarsals. A caveat, is that I have not run any distance, really, for about 20 years. A cyclist turning triathlete, needs to be very cautious. If this scenario matches yours, or if you are just getting back into running, I recommend several sessions of very short distance break-in time to allow bone structure in the foot to acclimate prior to any longer (2+) mile distances...no matter how good it feels. That said, I think I may become a big proponent of this footwear and may eventually buy the Five-finger Treks to protect on rockier ground.I won't buy any other kind of expensive running shoe ever again!

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

These shoes will change the way you run for the rest of your life. I have been using Nike Frees for the last two years and running only in socks on the treadmill, but KSOs give you the best of both worlds, almost barefoot running with protection from cuts and abrasions. Let's you run the way nature intended, striking the ground at mid-foot instead of your heal, greatly reducing injuries and allowing your toes to spread out and push off the ground. Literally feels like walking barefoot, whether walking or running. Great for anybody who has given up on running due to common chronic injuries. Only caveat is go slow at first, walk in them the first week; second week do only 1/4 to 1/3 your normal distances on a treadmill working up to your normal distances and pace in one to two months. I typically run 3 to 5 miles in my KSO every other day and will try them in a 5K race in the the near future. Also wear them around the house and walking outdoors.

I love my KSO's! Those who are not used to running barefoot should really run barefoot first before wearing KSOs. My calves knotted up because I was not used to running barefoot but these are perfect for barefoot or minimalist runners. Just remember to give yourself 4-6 weeks to adapt. Trust me from experience. KSOs rock but Vibram needs to pay more attention in the area of the stitching. My came loose at the top after a week. Easy to hand stitch back but shouldn't happen. Still recommend them. Hope this helps somewhat.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

I was a little reluctant to try these out because of how unorthodox they are but, I was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable they are. I had been having trouble finding shoes that fit my wide feet and while the fivefingers don't come in widths because of how they are made it doesn't make a lot of difference if you have wide feet. The KSOs are a little hard to put on and take off but you get used to it after a while. One major point is that after wearing them for a few hours you don't even realize they are there anymore and that's amazing.

I am an avid corssfiter and these shoes are great for all aspects of training. They are light weight, comfortable, and seem to holding up well. The most amazing thing about them is how great they feel when you run in them. I would recommend these shoes to anyone that is in the gym with heavy weight or is outside a lot. They are the all purpose shoes that I have been looking for.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

I am using this product to strengthen my feet for longer distance running. FiveFingers are awesome for "barefoot" running but as you will find with many posts this is a product that you need to slowly adapt to if you don't currently run barefoot. I had to hold off on using them for a couple of weeks as I had what felt like either tendonitis on the top of my foot or a stress fracture. I plan on using them today for the first time in a couple of weeks and my feet feel fine.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

They have been great. They do everything they are supposed to...Well except the odor control. They stink. Bad. Plus the quick drying feature is not so quick; they take about a day to totally dry. Also another bad thing about them is the Velcro straps can hook onto the main part of the strap and pull the strings out. Overall though they have been great. I use them for hiking, swimming, running, and just everyday use. They have incredible traction, and when you are running around indoors they can come in handy if you have to suddenly stop. I have never tripped in them and my balance has definitely improved since I've gotten them. I do love them and I wear them pretty often.

I use these to squat, run, or do any sort of exercise. They let you use your toes for balance and stabilize yourself when lifting heavy weights. They are also super comfortable for just walking around, especially on trails or paths. Driving with them lets you really feel the clutch pedal if you drive a manual, which helps for really worn out clutches.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

I bought a pair of the FiveFinger KSOs to start barefoot running, which has been a fantastic experience so far. I'm in grad school and the first time I had a chance to wear them was to class one morning. I didn't realize how much attention they would get. Some people are intrigued by them and others just think they are weird, but they definitely get attention wherever you go.

The Vibram website has sizing instructions which I used to figure out what size I needed. The fitting is extremely precise, so I would suggest trying them on before purchase if at all possible. All of the local shops that actually carry a stock of the FiveFingers were back ordered so this was not an option for me and I ordered them online from Rock Creek. Fortunately the recommended size was spot on for me. However, If you have odd toe lengths, there is a chance that your feet will not conform to the shape of the shoe.

I have only been running in them for a short time, but the first thing that struck me was that there is absolutely no shifting or rubbing of the shoe while running. I have been struggling with poorly fitting running shoes for a few years now and almost always had blisters on my feet after a long run. So far, I have had none of these issues with the KSOs; though I am still retraining myself for barefoot running and not "going the distance" at this point.

I highly recommend these to anyone interested.

I use the product to run 3-4 times a week, 1-3 miles per run, on various surfaces (paved roads, unpaved roads, cinder tracks, off-road/nature). I also wear the KSO's while weight training and when doing just about anything physical.

They feel great. I have a fallen arch in one foot and after about two months I no longer wear any supports when in normal shoes, and my feet feel better than ever.

Make sure to measure BOTH feet and size off the larger foot. If you are a hair over the length, or even right on the line, go a size larger by default.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

After learning the forefoot landing technique by running barefoot for three weeks, I switched over to FiveFingers, which preserve the barefoot feeling and add safety and protection.
I use them for running and racing on and off road. On trails you can feel every little stone on your feet ball/toes without being hurt
It requires a lot of adaptive training, in my case 6 weeks, to get used to them and have your skin, muscles and tendons adjusted. During this period is important to stop running if anything hurts or bothers, including little blisters. Training time depends from age, health condition, asymmetries between your left/right leg/foot, tendency to overpronation and previous usage of high stability/support shoes.
I can run faster and longer with these shoes!

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

I use these "shoes" for parkour and running, and they have been the best investment I have made in footwear thus far. I do parkour with a large group and have seen this shoe outperform ariakes and the five tens. Wet ground does not affect the grip too much and the sole is very sticky so you feel planted on the ground as you walk or run. Putting them on for the first few times is a bit of a chore, but gets easier with time. I bought these thinking that they would be uncomfortable, but I was proven wrong, they are super comfortable! They allow you to feel the ground more without much discomfort, which is something that you would not expect when you first look at the shoe. They also make a great ice breaker/conversation starter once people look at your feet! Overall, the only regret that I have is that I only bought one pair.

I bought these to test "barefoot running". I have completed 5 marathons and several tri's so running footwear is important to me. I am over 200lbs with flat feet. The KSO has never hurt me once on a run, concrete or grass. My hips/IT band/calves don't ache one bit. My feet and legs feel great after wearing them. If you train martial arts, you legs will NOT hurt after first putting these on. I thought mine might be too snug at first but after wearing them for one day, they are perfect (Normally an 11EE in Brooks. Bought size 43 in VFF's). Love 'em, love 'em, love 'em.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

A friend of mine turned me on to the idea of barefoot running about six months ago, but it wasn't until the new year that I decided I wanted to get back into shape. Running would of course be a big part of that. The only problem is, I hate running. So like most neglected areas of my life I figured I stood a better chance of actually doing the thing I hate if I spent a good chunk of cash on some gimmicky product designed to make horrible things fun. And that's exactly what Vibrams Five Fingers does.

So maybe fun is the wrong word. How about rewarding. After a month of running on all kinds of surfaces, from treadmills at the gym to asphalt to good old dirt my calves and shin muscles have more definition and strength than they ever have, and I was a gymnast in my youth.

It would be good to heed all the advice everyone has given regarding taking things slowly. You'll hate life for a couple of days if you keep on running when your feet and legs are saying stop. If there is anything negative I can say about them it's that having a little sleeve to slip each toe into is really irritating and uncomfortable at first. If you feel like you're on the verge of a panic attack just get up and start running. Once you're on your way you'll forget all about the individually wrapped sausages in your shoes.

Also, if you're the type of person who may suffer an identity crisis should gym beefcakes openly point and laugh at your feet, you'll probably want to invest in different shoes or at least not wear them where beefcakes are to be found. However, as silly as they look there is an undeniable "ninja" quality to these shoes, an aspect of design sadly neglected by most footwear designers these days.

One last thing. Running through grass after a long jog on asphalt and concrete is like like gulping ice cold lemonade on a hot summer day. You'll love it.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

I ordered these KSO's after trying many brands of conventional running shoes. I suffer from Piriformis syndrome which is a chronic "tweaking" of your sciatic nerve. Often (with traditional sneakers) once I start running 4-6 miles regularly, the tweaking causes sharp pains in my upper leg and lower back. It usually takes months to eventually go away after I stop running.

These KSO's have literally changed the way I run now. I started with short runs and "paid my dues" with about 2 weeks of sore calves, but now I'm pounding out 6 mile runs every other day with no calf, and more importantly NO SCIATIC PAIN.

I've noticed that with VFF's, I'm running more upright with my head, hips, and legs in the same vertical plane. I also try to let my foot "relax" and let the stride happen naturally. Result = a way more fun and painless run.

I run mostly in suburbs near horse farms and now with these shoes I will cut off the road to run in grass, gravel, or dirt. The different textures of the land bring a new life to a standard boring run. I can't wait for summer time trail runs.

Other than running, VFF's are now my go to shoes at the climbing gym and their thin soles and low profile are perfect for my feet while in hang gliding harness.

I decided to buy these after reading an article about the over-commercialization of running is causing undue wear and tear on joints not seen in early man.

These 'shoes' take a while to get used to because they force you to run on your toes. I recommend staying under 10-miles, and on even surfaces for a while.

I have far less knee pain when I run in these (but my heels don't hit the ground when I run).

This is the less sturdy model, so I usually stay on pavement.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

I originally purchased these to experiment with barefoot running to help reduce the amount of injuries I got from running. Usually every few months I'd get shin splints/plantar/achilles tendon/medial knee ligament/etc problems. Figured anything new was worth at least trying.

After wearing them for a day, I was hooked! Since then, I've worn regular running shoes only twice, and have bought two more pair to cycle them through (to dry out).

I've put seven months of running on these, with about 40 miles a week; around 1200 miles. My longest run in them was 27 miles. In that time, I've not had a single running injury (probably a record for me!). I run on paved paths, sandy trails, beaches, forests, and mountain terrain.

The two problems I've encountered are:
1. Bad on really rocky terrain - you have to keep your eyes open for sharp rocks as the arch has minimal protection.
2. Start to smell if you don't maintain them.

For the smell, I bought a couple more so they can dry out between wearings. I also put baking soda in them to absorb the smell. You can also toss these in the washer, then air dry.

I wear these on a daily basis everywhere: running, working, formal events, etc. They're great conversation starters too!

Quick note on buying them: These are sized VERY specifically, so I highly recommend finding a local shop to get sized and buy your first pair. Once you know your size, they seem to be pretty consistent, so ordering on-line is fine. They will be just a touch snug at first, but should feel like a second skin after wearing them for a bit.

Bottom line: they're cheaper than running shoes. I've been injury free for seven months, and they show no signs of wear yet. If you're at all curious, buy them.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

If you're outdoorsy, you've probably read about these in an article or website about barefooting. These Vibram's are getting a lot of press right now, and it's well deserved in my opinion.

They're great for boating, swimming and trips to the beach or river. But, I'm a runner and bought them as an alternative to my Asics. I've been wearing my KSO's nearly two years now for every single run, including 3 half-marathons.

I love the feel of running with almost nothing on my feet. I thought having something between my toes would really bother me, but I don't even notice (just like gloves for my hands don't bother me). The KSO's make me feel light and REALLY fast.

The first time I put them on, the absence of a thick running shoe heel made my form near perfection and kept me in a sprinter's stance the entire time. And there's the only con in my opinion. You've got to take the transition to Vibram's SLOW if you're using them for running.

Try running in socks on carpet. Your body won't let itself land on your heels. Same concept here. Your entire body weight is caught on the ball of your foot and calves.

I won't pretend to be a doctor or a running expert (I'm neither), but when I run in my Vibram's it feels right to my body. My stride is light and fast during the run and my hips and knees don't feel sore afterward (even after 13 miles).

There are more and more running shoe "alternatives" on the market, but these keep getting the highest ratings and stores can't stock them fast enough. They're actually less expensive than a new pair of runners, so give 'em a shot.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

Once I learned about these shoes I wanted them right away. Sadly I lived at least an hour away from the nearest store that carried them and once I got there they were all sold out. I had wanted to try them on in order to find the best fit because that is obviously a very important part of this shoe. Once I ordered and received the shoes I tried them on and they were extremely hard to get on the first time, I have gotten faster at it but I don't believe that I order a size slightly small. Within the first day or two from tugging at the shoe trying to get it on a small rip had formed on the left side of my right big toe. However, once I finally got time to take these shoes out and use them for what I wanted, trial running, I loved them. I was never one to go run around in bare feet before but with these shoes you can do just that, but with protection. It's hard to explain but it really feels like I was using my feet for the first time. With the flexibility of the sole I could rap my feet around trees and climb straight up like a monkey, and with the uniquely designed, individual toe slots I could feel the mud between my toes as I ran through the woods. These shoes make me look at the world differently, it makes me challenge myself to see how far I jump, how high I can climb, or how fast I can run. Lastly, Vibram Five Fingers even made running fun again, it really made me feel like a kid, and all I wanted to do was go outside and PLAY. I am very glad that someone finally came up with a shoe like this, and that I was finally able to get a pair for myself. The only regret I have is that I didn't get them sooner and that I can use them everyday.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

Important to follow sizing guidelines on Vibram website for a good fit. I wear these exclusively on hilly sand and dirt trails. I transitioned over a period of 4 months, by first running in Crocs for a few months, then walking in VFFs, then gradually working up to about 6 miles of running in VFFs. Now I crave that "barefoot" feel and wear them for 3-4 x 6 miles runs per week. As the weather is getting colder, I've noticed that my toes are cold by the end of the run. Although I could wear toe socks with them, I do not like the way they feel with socks. So once the snow flies I will run in water mocs and trail running shoes for the winter. Since I began running in VFFs, I no longer care for my overbuilt trail shoes. I have since switched to lighter weight trail shoes. My feet and ankles definitely feel stronger. It's wonderful to run almost silently along the trails.

I trail run in them, hike in them, and wear them all day at work. I would recommend getting Injinji toe socks tho...keeps ur feet much cleaner and smelling fresh. My running relates injuries disappeared soon after buying these, and I can feel a noticeable increase in the overall strength of my foot after two months. The only bad thing I noticed is the velcro strap is fraying a little at the contact points. We'll see how long those last. Oh, and every third person on the sidewalk says something about them. But I am still completely satisfied. Thanks Vibram

I love to go bearfoot but its just not acceptable or practical now days, however if you can get over the odd looks you get when you wear them its the next best thing to being barefoot. I love to running in these also. I have noticed my balance and lower leg strength has greatly improved since first wearing these, and since they are so light, I love to throw them in my pack for a camp shoe also.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

This is a fantastic fitness shoe. I lift weights and run in these shoes because of the minimalist design; it allows your body to do the work instead of relying on modern shoe technologies that often cause more harm than good. You will likely require a period of adjustment during which your leg and foot muscles adapt to natural, unsupported biomechanics. After that, it's all positive with this great product. The Vibram Five Fingers shoe is a durable, light-weight, protective, and ultra-responsive piece of equipment that will improve any athlete's performance.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

Unless you live in a very cold climate, you can wear these things without socks just about as long as you want and you wont even get a hot spot, let alone a blister, which is kind of a nice perk, not having to purchase any more over priced sport socks.

The only problems I have with the five fingers is their color selection, and that the pinky toe for whatever reason is too long. I guess I've got abnormally short pinky toes or something because all the other toes fit perfectly, but the pinky toe has a good half inch of vacant space. It does not make the shoe less comfortable in any way though, it just sort of bugs me. Oh yeah, I live in Phoenix, so when I use these in the middle of the day, my feet start to burn. The rubber sole is tough, but it's not quite impervious to 120 plus degree cement.

These are great shoes, you wont be disappointed. They're also guaranteed to spark a conversation. Be prepared to explain countless times that yes, they are like gloves for your feet, and no, it does not hurt to walk in them.

So ditch the sneakers, turns out you wont be needing them.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

Great pair of footwear. I ended up getting a 44 instead of a 42 and am glad I did. They really feel like gloves for your feet. They do take a bit of getting used to walking around in, but after that you can pretty much go anywhere in them. Really great for the outdoors from washing your car to playing a round of frolf. Only negative I can think is if you wear these without socks (why wouldn't you?) they tend to get smelly, but one quick wash and hang dry and you are good to go. Thinking about getting a second pair![...] Best price online [...]. Doesn't get any better.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

When I got these shoes I had to get another pair as the sizing on the website wasn't correct. Even a size up I find the shoes painful after wearing them for a while. But they feel AMAZING in the water. I really like how they corrected how I walked and they feel good when I initially put them on. After about 1.5-2 hours though my big toe nail throbs from the design of the shoe (and possibly a sizing issue). I don't know if anyone else had this problem but these are Short-term -wear shoes. Also, after the second time putting them on the weave tore slightly even though I was gentle and followed their "How to put them on" recommendation.I would probably get the Classics or Sprint next time.

I bought these shoes to help fix my posture, reintroduce myself to trail running, and in general live a healthier barefoot lifestyle. Shortly after buying them I went tubing in Helen GA and they were absolutely PERFECT for running up and down the river. Since I bought them I've worn them so much and am considering ordering a few more pair just to keep in storage until the sad day this pair wears out. [...]

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

After I bought my FiveFingers they haven't straighten (yet) out my little toes which many have said they should do (actually not that important). But even better, they've instead let my instep (metatarsus) widen so much that I've gotten much better balance. The downside however is that all my previous sneakers feel all too narrow or tight now. Then my fivefingers might be a bit too big cause they tend to move a bit around and cause blisters when I run with them on. No problem however when I'm walking, that's when they're most comfortable!

These shoes were a gift for my 30 year old son, my 23 year old daughter and 17 year old step grand daughter. My son told me that's what he wanted for his birthday and he also wanted a pair for his sister and step daughter. I looked up the shoes on line and thought those are so weird. I ordered the shoes and gave them to my son. They live in them, they go hiking, swimming, rock climbing. Amanda who is a chimney sweep and mason even builds chimneys in them.I highly recommend them to any one, they get so much attention from everyone, what are those is the usual question, followed by a big spiel about how they are the greatest shoes ever!!Just buy them you won't regret it.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

These shoes are incredibly comfortable and, in my opinion, extremely cool in appearance, and unbeatable in function. Brilliant is a good way to describe them - it's hard to improve on millions of years of evolution!

I've got several pairs and like the KSOs and Classics the best. I wear them to work, for walking around town, for hiking, running, trail running, river hiking, river tubing, etc.

some people have thought I'm nuts for running up and down mountains in these, but they're really fantastic trail runners. really light, really bouncy, great feel for terrain. stubbing your toes in these isn't any worse than stubbing your toes in regular shoes, but you do have to be a little careful with your little toe on the outside - don't want to catch that on a rock or root and pull it out sideways ... almost did that once, not fun. but that's rare.

incidentally, the only reason I mentioned the con of "causes blisters or hotspots" is that there's a thin bit of stitching inside the KSOs by the ball of the foot near the big toe, that after several hours of hiking and two of running down the mountain, whereby the stitching wore in that one place rather painfully... maybe next time I'll be smart and wear socks, huh? wearing socks would definitely take care of the problem.

the only thing that's not so great about them is if you're trying to keep your feet dry. these breathe really well, and are by no means waterproof or even water resistant, so unless you mind your feet getting wet, it's best to wear these only when it's dry outside.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

I originally purchesed the shoes to strenghten my feet so I wouldn't get blisters in boot camp. But as I was waiting for my departure date, I picked up a job as a lifegaurd and the shoes have become my everyday attire.
They are the perfect mix of a shoe that gives you the comfort you need on the beach as well as the ruggedness and flexability needed to be athletic. Flip flops suck because you end up taking them off anyway every time you need to do any kind of strenuous activity.
With these you can walk, run, frolick, or skip with conference and even go in and out of the water without worrying about soggy shoes. They are gods gift to feet. I'm about to order my second pair this week.

I've only been wearing these for 2 days but I already notice a difference. I feel much more "stable" while wearing these and I can feel my toes becoming more involved with my balance.

A note on sizing: Luckily I was able to try these on at a local shop. I measured my feet as described on the Vibram website and came up as 10 3/4 inches. That would have put me as a mens 42 by the manufacturer sizing. I ended up with a 44 although I could have gone with a 45 also. I might just buy both sizes next time.

Have been using this product since March 2008, have NOT put on tennis shoes since. It does take a bit to get used to at first. You will use muscles in your calves and feet that may have been underused due to tennis shoes. But it is an INCREDIBLE improvement in calf and body strength

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

While rehabing a partial meniscectomy I came across this study: [@](walking barefoot causes less stress on knees and hips than walking with shoes). Having worn prescription orthotics for years the results came as a surprise. When it was time to begin running again I decided to give barefoot running a try but, being the big baby I am, wanted some type of protection. After a bunch of research I ended up with these shoes. The results have been pretty amazing. My stride has changed, my hammer toe is almost gone and my knee feels good. The only down side is that it's hard for me to pull off the look in most public settings (even at the climbing gym I get no end of quizical looks). My next goal is to find a day to day shoe with the same type of "barefoot" performance.

these shoes ( if you can call them that ) are great. my roommate got a pair and i couldn't let him have all the fun so i bought myself a pair. when they got in i tried them on and could not believe how comfortable they felt. the first thing i did was to go run around outside in the snow. now this is a mistake. they are great for the running part but not for the snow. i have been wearing them to all my classes and i am stopped at least once a day by comments such as: "are those shoes?" , "are you wearing socks?" and "Dude where can i get a pair?". these suckers are durable and comfortable. i recomend them to every one who asks about them because they have helped my posture and my balance.

They are great for exercising. They are really confortable and are like being barefoot. I would reccomend wearing with sock or your need to wash them alot. I wear them for crossfit also and they are great. You can wear them to the gym for anything your doing. The downfalls include; they have no traction on ice and provide no protection from stubbing your toes.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

I got the KSO's to run on the beach and not worry about cutting up my feet while still getting the benefit of barefoot running. They do the job, they protect my feet while keeping them safe from being cut on shells or other debris on the beach. They are a little tricky at first to get your toes into it but after a few times it becomes easier. The only difficulty was figuring out what size to get them in since they list European sizes.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

I own a pair and I have used them for just about everything. The KSO are better for keeping out particulates that can get into the other styles. They are certainly great around water because they dry out quickly, but I use them for any outdoor activities, including jogging, hiking, and biking. I wear them on my walk to work on the streets of Los Angeles. I've walked over a shattered glass bottle to test their durability and felt no discomfort. They do take some getting used to, but I've been wearing toe socks for years, so I took to them like a fish to water. I have people stop me all the time to ask me about them. I had some initial problem with finding the correct fit because I have long toes, but Vibram swapped out my first pair that didn't fit. After a week of breaking them in, they fit me like a second skin. My only wish is that they come out with some sleeker, less sporty-looking styles so I can get away with wearing them with less casual clothes.

Comments about Vibram FiveFingers KSO (Men's):

I bought these thinking they would alleviate some runners injuries I had (plantar fasciitis and achilles tendonitis). It did not help, but I think having such shoes might have prevented them. Wearing them definitely changes the way you walk and run, which may have long-term benefits. You do not strike hard on the heel with them. I ran in them for about 2 months. Later, I stopped running completely for 2 months, and my injuries healed. I am going to try running in them again. The "antibacterial" stuff maybe lasts a few days. You should wear socks with them or they get real smelly, as they don't breathe very well and feet can get hot and sticky. I ran on the beach with them, without socks, and the sand that creeps in caused blisters.

Bought these as an alternative to traditional water shoes for wetfooting in the BWCAW. They are very well suited for this, although you do have to move your feet a little more carefully, as they don't protect your toes from stubbing like shoes would. WAY better than sandals, though.
