Bill Bryson, an American who has lived in England most of his adult life, is a wonderfully witty writer. This book, and his look at travelling through Australia: "In a Sunburned Country" are his two funniest. Both are laugh-out-loud funny.
This book, on hiking a (small) part of the Appalachian Trail, as a novice hiker, is not useful for learning anything about hiking or the Appalachian Trail, its just a good, humorous book, well written, fun.
