Having a good rain jacket and pants are a necessity while backpacking, without them, being miserable, and hypothermia could be a very real threat. Being able to keep the elements out while still retaining a level of breathability is the main function of our rainwear. Levels of breathability in a rain pants vary, from basic Marmot PreCip or Patagonia's H2NO to the Gore-Tex Pro Shell.
Another option you need to look at while shopping for rain pants are if they have full or partial side zips. Full zips have more ventilation options in warmer weather, are easier to take on and off over your boots, but they are more susceptible to leaking in heavy rains. Partial zips are harder to put on over your boots but are lighter and less vulnerable to leaking.
