Layering is key with any outdoor clothing. Hardshell rain jackets are most appropriate for backpacking trips and other outdoor activities where you need them maximum possible protection from the elements. Hardshells will not allow rain or snow in, but will allow perspiration out, keeping you dry and comfortable.
Levels of breathability in a rain jacket vary, from basic Marmot PreCip to the most breathable Gore-Tex 2- and 3-layer as well as XCR.
If you need maximum breathability for more athletic pursuits, and you aren't as worried about having an absolutely waterproof jacket, try a softshell jacket. These also make great layering pieces under a hardshell.
