Long Underwear & Base Layers: Synthetic vs. wool is the key question when it comes to choosing a new pair of long underwear. They both work very well but have different characteristics which make them suited better for different activities. Synthetic fibers were designed to wick and dry very quickly which makes them more appropriate for very aerobic activities like running and skiing. Eco-friendly wool fibers do a better job at regulating your body’s temperature and also has a natural odor repellency. This makes wool more suited for stop and go activities like climbing or hiking. Although wool and synthetic fibers have different characteristics, they both do an excellent job of wicking away moisture and keeping you dry and comfortable.
Base layers generally come in three different weights or thicknesses; lightweight, midweight, and expedition weight. Lightweight is great for cool mornings or as a just-in-case layer if you are unsure of the weather. It is also works great for warmer weather because it is generally the fastest wicking while it also helps to keep the sun off your skin. Midweight is a great all around weight for cool to cold weather activities when you are staying active. These work great as a layer under an insulated jacket or as a standalone piece when the temps begin to rise. Expedition weight is for extreme cold or stop and go activities when you need a lot of insulation. These are often cut so that you could fit a lighter weight layer under them for arctic temperatures.
