Softshell jackets- a relatively new technology- are rapidly gaining in popularity. They offer the most movement and are made with stretch fabrics that move with you during exercise. While they’re not quite as impenetrable as hard shell jackets, a good soft shell will give you some warmth and plenty of protection from precipitation while giving you maximum breathability.
Soft shell jackets are designed for active athletic pursuits like ice climbing, trail running, or backcountry skiing. Vendors like Marmot, Mountain Hardwear, Patagonia, Arc'Teryx, offer the highest quality softshell jackets on the market.
We're also seeing more "hybrid" jackets that combine the best qualities of softshells while still providing a high degree of protection from the elements. Mammut's Transmission Hybrid Pro Jacket is an excellent example of this new technology.
