prAna Yoga Clothing
prAna yoga clothing, pants, and mats are some of the best in the world. prAna has become one of our favorite brands here at Rock/Creek. We tend to wear their button-up shirts regularly to the office and trade shows, and then their performance clothing like yoga pants and synthetic wicking tees are second to none. Our buyers have commented on the relaxed, so-Cal attitude and earthy colors as highlights of the new prAna line that's here for Spring.
The prAna clothing company started over 20 years ago making clothes that worked well for climbing and yoga. It turned out that their yoga clothing worked well for lots of other passions too, so they added new products with "purpose" in mind and scoured the world for design inspiration. They cut and sewed yoga gear in their garage and shipped it to customers in surplus fruit boxes gathered from the local grocery store. For hang tags, prAna ground up old newspapers, added essential oils and cut out the handmade paper with a pizza cutter. Their first employee slept on a hinged bed that turned into a shipping table by day. What's changed since then? Not much - and a lot. prAna has grown a bunch, but most of the original employees are still there.
They participate in business with like-minded folks who want to promote conservation and create positive change, which reflects the same intention as the old days, just taken up a few notches. Organic cotton, fair trade and wind power initiatives are on the short list of what they support. The word prAna is Sanskrit for breath, life or vitality of spirit, and the principle helps guide everything the company does. In 1992, Beaver Theodosakis and his wife Pam started this company out of a garage in Carlsbad, California. Today it's one of the leading manufacturers of yoga clothing and casual clothing in specialty retailers around the world.
World-class athletes like Chris Sharma and yogis like Shiva Rea serve to inspire prAna's clothing and business. Together they push themselves to be better, to do more, and to decrease their negative impact on the world. They're shooting for a balance between ideals and business success, and we think they've figured it out. Tell us what you think!
