The Grigri Belay Device, invented by Petzl, introduced a revolutionary technique of belaying and descending. Others have tried to copy but the Grigri remains a quantum leap ahead and is still the premium choice for a self-locking belay. The Grigri allows belaying and lowering of a climber even where the latter is heavier than the belayer. A handle allows easy control of the device and smooth running of the rope. The Grigri works somewhat like an automobile seat belt: when movements are slow, the rope runs freely through the device; when there is a shock load, the Grigri locks, jamming the rope with a cam.

A must have, this thing saves weight and works great on belay, repel, hauling load, ect. Repelling with this is a little different than repeling with caribiners, the figure 8, or a rack. Everything takes a little practice to get used to. Ask youself how much is your life worth when chosing between this and another belay device.
