Alaska, the Alps, the Karakoram: the men's Patagonia DAS Parka has long been synonymous with cold-weather alpine climbing the world over – and it just got better. The most significant overhaul in DAS history includes a far more sculpted fit that maximizes warmth (while still sized as a belay parka), loftier 120-g PrimaLoft Synergy insulation throughout, and an additional layer of 60-g PrimaLoft One throughout the torso. The lightweight, PU-coated nylon ripstop shell (with Deluge DWR finish) is durable, more water-resistant and windproof. All this while shaving a few ounces off the weight. A single-pull, adjustable, helmet-compatible hood and a tall collar traps extra heat. A few fine points: zippered and insulated handwarmer pockets, a zippered chest pocket, large interior mesh pockets for drying gloves, elasticized cuffs, a drawcorded droptail hem and a 2-way zip (with internal, insulated wind flap) that lets you see your belay device. Stuffsack included.

        Comments about Patagonia DAS Parka:

I recently purchased a Patagonia Das Parka from RockCreek. I haven't had the parka very long. I understand this parka is primarily for active people and as I'm 74 with congestive heart failure I'm not going to be out climbing mountains or doing a lot of strenuous activity.

I purchased this parka for it's extremely light weight to warmth. As you get older the weight factor of the what you wear for cold weather becomes important. I have a down parka but it gets rather heavy and when you wash it you may as well kiss it goodbye for about three days if you hang it to dry. This parka is very light weight and warm, wash it and you get it back within a very short period of time depending on whether you elect to hang it or air dry it in the dryer.

My only experience with cold weather with the parka was actually just a few days ago. I did my usual get up around 5 AM, fix me some coffee and go out on the patio. The weather report in the paper said the low would be around 30. I did my usual routine and went out on the patio with my coffee. This is exactly what I was wearing at the time. A pair of sneakers with regular old white cotton socks, a pair of Wrangler jeans, boxer shorts, a t-shirt, a lightweight long sleeve fleece pullover and my Das parka. After about 30 or 45 minutes my feet, legs, and hands were getting cold and my upper body was just a little chilly. I went back in the house, booted up my computer and checked the weather for the Benbrook area and found it was 22 degrees with a wind chill factor I believe of 15 degrees.

Now I realize this is not mind numbing cold but you have to take into consideration exactly what I was wearing at the time. So yes I think the Das Parka does exactly what it was designed for. A very lightweight warm parka for active people. I believe that if I had had a base layer, suitable footware and head protection even I would have been warm and maybe even too toasty.

If they had one with 300-400 grams of Primaloft for us older people we might not even need an upper body base layer and I would buy IT!

          Comments about Patagonia DAS Parka:

I use the Patagonia DAS Parka all the time in the winter. It is the best jacket that I have ever owned. It's nice to put on when you want to be instantly warm. After a long cold run it's great to come back to my car and have an oversized insulating jacket waiting for me. I have never been cold while I have had the DAS Parka on.
