The Critical Mass Bag by Patagonia is a full-sized, fully featured courier bag that holds all the gear you need for a full day - from the gym to school to the office.

Climbers have haul bags, commuters have the Critical Mass. Downsized slightly this season for easier carrying, this bike bag still holds enough gear for a full day without bogging you down. It has padding on the back and along the contoured base to protect contents and provide structure. The main compartment features a drop pocket that secures with a hook-and-loop tab, a mesh pocket for visibility, a padded electronics pocket, pen sleeves and a secure zippered pocket. A padded computer sleeve suspends a 17-inch or smaller laptop off the ground to keep it safe from hard knocks. The front flap overlaps both sides of the bag to thwart rain; it has a pocket that closes with a water-resistant zipper. An external side pocket holds a phone, power cords or water bottle. Its no-slip shoulder strap is fully adjustable, and the waist strap stows away when not in use. With a topside carrying handle, a reflective panel for visibility at night and a bike-light mount. Made of 600-denier recycled polyester with a polyurethane coating and a Deluge DWR (durable water repellent) finish.

Comments about Patagonia Critical Mass Bag - 2008:

Excellent product; Patagonia is always a good buy.

I carry two large cameras, a large lens and a few smaller lenses, a 15" laptop, a few books and some odds and ends in here. And believe it or not, there's room for more, and despite the weight of what I carry (~18-30 lbs) the strap distributes the weight very well and my shoulder doesn't get nearly as fatigued as it could. Very good for a single-strap bag.

The padding is smartly placed and doesn't move around. Even with a laptop in the built-in pocket, it fits my back and doesn't bounce. The pockets are well thought out. It repels water very well, although obviously if you're going rafting you'll want something geared more toward that.

It's okay for biking, but like most messenger bags, if you turn your body around, the bag will fall to the front. The little keeper strap helps a little, but physics are physics. The wide strap and the construction improve on the classic flat messenger bag concept considerably, however. I'd go for this over any other messenger bag I've ever used on a bike.

Only wish two things: that the cross strap buckle was easier to flip from side to side so I could switch shoulders and still have the extra strap, and that the flap pocket was the same size as the flap, or at least close.
