The BugOut Gaiters by Outdoor Research are designed to keep harmful, biting insects from getting in contact with your skin.  Permethrin is a man made version of a natural insect repellent found in certain chrysanthemum plants and binds tightly to fabric fibers offering you insect protection around the area of the gear.  The types of insects repelled by Insect Shield is mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers and no-see ums.
