Before there were cams, there was passive protection. Some of the most solid placements in rock are with passive placements, due to the fact their protection is provided by its piece of metal wedged and lodged into the crack with downward movement (ie a fall) would only make it drop deeper. From nuts, to tri-cams, placing this type of gear is like learning how to juggle. We suggest if you are placing these pieces to take a class or follow an experienced leader and clean this type of gear. If placed wrong it can pull out easily and with many pitches that run to the left and right you can pop them out. But to this day, passive gear is lighter, and can be left if retreat is the only option. If you are building your rack you must have passive protection on your harness.
