Comments about Mammut Smart Belay Device:
Today I bought the Mammut Smart Belay reluctantly over the infamous Grigri by Petzl. After a bit of homework and a brief discussion with the Rock/Creek salesman (thanks Josh), I opted for the Smart. It was a big question mark and I couldn't find too much review on the item, especcially in comparison to the Grigri, but the price tag was initiative enough to give it a shot. I was pleasantly surprised with the tension that was removed from the belayer and the overall smoothness of feeding rope and taking slack. It does all that you could want from a belay with half the weight, and one-fourth the price. There were a few snags in lowering a climber that a little intuition and troubleshooting quickly fixed. Overall, don't be afraid of the funky appearance, save some money and give it a try.
