Hoka One One trail running shoes are now available at Rock/Creek
"Rock/Creek Race Team member Randy Whorton was skeptical... he immediately took them out for a 20-mile run, followed by a hard 6-miler on the most technical trails in the Chattanooga area. Thrilled with the results to that point, he decided to wear them while running the Black Mountain 50k. Here's what he wrote after the race..."

- Perfect Fit
- Perfect ride
I run on trails and the road in my mafates. They fit beautifully and have never let me down on either terrain. And they're wicked warm in winter! My only sad face is that the soles wear down pretty quick, and when the tread is gone they're pretty slippery in mud, grass and wet sidewalks. This is my third pair and I haven't found anything yet I'd rather have.

I first saw these shoes when I was a volunteer at the Hardrock 100. Karl Meltzer and Diana Finkle both were wearing them. I thought they looked odd, heavy and cumbersome. I had never seen trail shoes that looked liked overgrown road shoes. However, after seeing them in ads in trail running magazines and seeing other trail runners wearing them, I had to check them out. When I first put them on, I could not believe how light they were and how comfortable. The first time I ran in mine (birthday present to myself) was on a gravel road. I could not believe how comfortable they were and I could not feel the gravels. Then I ran in them on a dirt hilly trail with many roots. Running downhill was so "bouncy" like I had on shock absorbers. I think these are great, especially for older runners wanting to protect their knees. I am in love with mine and will most likely buy another pair when I wear these out.

It's hard to know what to think about these shoes until you try them on and run in them. The profile makes them look like platform shoes but your foot actually sits fairly low in the shoe and they feel like normal shoes except that they are super cushy. This comfort factor is certainly present for walking but where they are really great is that they displace the impact of landing and the sharp or hard edges of rocks or roots. I haven't put enough miles on them to know if they will be great for the 600 or 700 miles as touted by their manufacturers but I do know that they have allowed me to feel more comfortable during and after running several days in a row than any shoes I have been wearing. I have a disk problem so the impact displacement is important. And so is being able to run as many days as I can. The shoe employs barefoot "technology", which means it is designed for mid or forefoot strikers. And while I thought I would feel like I was walking in clown shoes because of the wide and high sole, they feel normal. And they feel GREAT!
