More and more, hikers are trading in traditional mid-cut leather hiking boots for lightweight, low-cut hiking shoes. While ruggedness of terrain and your backpack weight are both considerations before making the switch, backpackers and fastpackers alike are taking part in the revolution. Hiking shoes can be more comfortable and less blister-prone than hiking boots, and usually don't require a break-in period. For especially rocky terrain -- or if you just prefer extra ankle support -- a classic hiking boot might still be your best bet. Burly backpacking boots may not be a necessity for day hikes, but don't be shy about wearing them if you find this style to be most comfortable. Whether your plans include fast-and-light weekend trips or weeklong treks, hiking shoes (sometimes also referred to as multi-sport shoes or approach shoes) free your feet from clunky boots so you can move nimbly down the trail; most ultralight backpackers even wear trail running shoes or light hiking shoes exclusively on thru-hikes and long trips! These hiking shoes include many of the same features as boots, often including Gore-Tex waterproof linings and grippy Vibram soles. There are a lot of choices available, from Merrell, Vasque, Asolo, Keen, Salomon, Five Ten, The North Face, Montrail, La Sportiva and more. When selecting a hiking shoe, as with hiking boots, fit should be a primary concern. Rock/Creek employees are shoe-fitting experts, and we love to help find the right hiking shoes for our customers... no matter which brand or style you prefer!
