Rock/Creek Greenway 5 Mile Welcomed Young and Old to the Trails
A encouraging community of families, friends and enthusiastic “cheering squads” welcomed more than 200 participants to this year’s Rock/Creek Trail Series Greenway 5 mile race on Saturday August 7, 2010 at Greenway Farm in Hixson, TN.
Runners of all ages and experience levels shared the trails in attempts to achieve personal running goals, or obtain the coveted course record bragging rights of 2010.
Charging over the finish line for the First Place Men’s Overall Finish was Ted Towse from Nashville, TN with a time of 30:39:87. Achieving his second place status two years in a row was Men’s Overall Finisher John Sillery from Chattanooga, TN with a time of 3-:51:08 and following in Third Place Men’s Overall was Geno Phillips from Chattanooga, TN with a time of 31:12:62.
For the Women’s division, Lanni Merchant sets the new women’s course record with a blazing fast time of 32:39:40. This is almost 3 minutes faster than Jan Gautier’s previous course record holding time in 2008 which was 35:57:37. Second Place Women’s Overall was Christy Woodard from Hixson, TN with a finish time of 41:36 and coming in Third Place was Misty Griffin from Birmingham, AL, with a time of 41:56.
The 5 mile race would not be the same without the variance amoung the young and the “gracefully aged”. The following are results for the Men’s and Women’s Masters finishers as well as the Under 18 years of age division:
Finishing in first place for the Men’s Masters was Gary Adkins from Hixson, TN with a time of 34:45. Coming in shortly after first was Second Men’s Masters finisher William Warner from Ringgold, GA with a time of 35:30 and behind him with Third Place Men’s Masters was Rock/Creek Race Team Member, Randy Whorton from Chattanooga, TN with a finish time of 38:01.
First place Women’s Masters was Rock/Creek Race Team Member Kris Whorton from Chattanooga, TN with a finish time of 41:12. Coming in second place women’s masters was Belinda Young from Chatsworth, GA with a time of 42:48 and Third place was Sue Barlow with a time of 44:42.
For our younger competitors, our First Place finisher under 18 years old was Mathew Marshall with a finish time of 31:32. This is also Fourth Place overall for the Men’s Overall Division. Second Place youth division winner is Zachary McCormick with a time of 36:34 and behind him in third place was Nicholas McCormick with 40:47.
Rock/Creek is pleased with the number of participants who wanted to get a head start on the day with an early morning trail run despite the heat. Whether this was a participant’s first race, a training run, or leisurely stroll, we are proud to share the experience of trail running with our community.
Proceeds of the Greenway 5 mile go to local non-profits who promote the use, protection and expansion of trails in greater Chattanooga.
