Last weekend, Rock/Creek was on the water with the Tennessee Valley Canoe Club for its annual Paddle School! Rock/Creek is a sponsor for this instructional event, so we set up a booth, answered questions about gear and outfitting a kayak, and we hooked them up with a Dagger Mamba for their live auction.
After registration on Friday night, and a party, class sessions kicked off Saturday morning with an enormous safety meeting; In fact, Rock/Creek employee and paddler Sara Horne says that it was “the biggest safety meeting I’ve ever seen.”
Students were in various classes all day Saturday on the Hiwassee & Ocoee rivers. A barbecue dinner that night, followed by a party even bigger than Friday’s party, was topped off with another day of classes on Sunday. Rock/Creek employee Sam Voight taught the intermediate paddling class on the Ocoee. A couple hundred students got to check out OAR’s new rafting outpost while taking a variety of classes, ranging from sea kayakers to advanced whitewater paddlers to first-time-in-a-boat beginners.
