Is this pack too large for day hikes?

It depends on your needs. If you're looking for a pack that's specific for day hikes and don't plan to do any overnight backpacking, I'd say it's definitely larger than you'd want. However, if you're looking for a pack that's large enough to do a weekend trip but can still be used day hiking, this would be a good choice. Lots of people use their backpacking packs for double-duty on shorter hikes, and this will be far less cumbersome than a long-haul backpacking pack intended for being out weeks at a time.
