With superb balance, leashless capability and an optional integrated leash, the Black Diamond Viper is a technical, all-terrain tool. It offers the greatest clearance of any technical Black Diamond tool due to its minor axis shaft orientation. Each tool is equipped with the Viper Fang, a lower attachment that cradles your hand. It fights the pump along with a smaller, dual-density, hourglass grip. For hard ice climbing, use the optional integrated Viper Android Leash, and for running it leashless, attach the optional Viper Strike upper grip attachment.

great tools!

By Todd

Comments about Black Diamond Viper Ice Tool:

Our outdoor rec gear locker has 5 types of tools, and I keep going back to the vipers. So much so I finally committed and bought my own pair after 6 years of playing with all of them. They have held up to years of abuse by our students, with never an issue. The clearance the tool gives is great on steep and vertical ice and does well even on minor to moderate overhangs. Vipers just fit my swing, in thin to heavy gloves. More aggressive tools work serious overhangs better, but they just don't stick as well for me and I don't get the feel of placement like I've come to expect. Vipers are weighted and balanced great, and I look forward to jealously hording my own set for years to come.

Comments about Black Diamond Viper Ice Tool:

Used the Vipers for my intro to ice climbing Hyalite this last weekend. I led WI3 and a WI3/4 mixed route on my first day. Climbed several routes including The Dribbles and led another WI4 on day three. The are very solid. They have a nice swing, the pick works will in the ice and although I had to get used to the feeling; the pick held very well on the rock. These tools feel very balances.

Great all around tool

By Steve

Comments about Black Diamond Viper Ice Tool:

I purchased the Vipers a few years back and have been greatly satisfied with their performance. The are fairly light weight, they swing and stick well with just the right touch. There is surprisingly little vibration for being aluminum. I bought Fusions last year to up my game a bit, but I still go back to the Vipers depending on the route. There is just something about them that brings me back to them.

Highly reccommended ice tool

Comments about Black Diamond Viper Ice Tool:

After climbing vertical ice for a few seasons and absolutely loving it, I had decided it was time to purchase my own tools. I was lucky enough to have the the oppurtunity of renting and borrowing several different tools as a beginner climber. The BD Vipers were my favorite ice tools so I bought them, love them and have been using them ever since. They are lightweight, easy to sink, dont have excess vibration and most importantly! they are not knuckle bashers. :)

Viper Ice tool

Comments about Black Diamond Viper Ice Tool:

Fantastic all around tool. While I think there are better steep ice or pure mixed tools out there these are my go to tool for just about anything. I like the narrow grip diameter and the pick angle relative to the shaft (not too aggressive so it works well on less steep terrain). I used leashes for a period of time but for the past several years have dropped those and have been very happy with how these function leashless. When needed I will use the Spinner tether.

you need to redesign your picks

By TedL

Comments about Black Diamond Viper Ice Tool:

I've been using the Vipers for several years (and have also used the Cobras several times). They are great tools, but you need to redesign your picks (and maybe also head angle), because in the last year I have also used the Cassin X-All Mountain and the Cassin X-Dream and am seriously considering switching to one of those tools because nothing sticks as well as they do and they've got a wonderfully natural swing - it always takes me a little while to dial in the Viper swing. Bottom line is I find I use considerably less energy with the Cassin tools and feel more confident with them in brittle ice. However, I greatly prefer the ergonomic grips on the BD tools. Also, one crucial modification I've made to the Vipers is to wrap "rescue tape" (grippy, stretchy silicone tape marketed for fixing leaking pipes) on the upper grip - otherwise the metal makes my hands cold very quickly and I overgrip because it's slippery.
