Great Axe!

By Robert

from Skagway, AK, USA

Comments about Black Diamond Raven Pro Ice Tool:

I like this axe a lot! Light and Sharp. I am 6'3" and have the 75. It is a good length for when I need it, on inclines. Nicely done!

Too short and too light

By John

from Kathmandu

Comments about Black Diamond Raven Pro Ice Tool:

This is a great axe when it comes to weight but that is also its biggest drawback. It didn't have the heft to puncture the ice conditions we were on in Nepal. Other people in the group had heavier axes that were able to drive the shaft into the ice and snow where this axe would bounce off unless pounded in several times. The shaft was also too short making me have to lean over off balance to get it into the snow.

The perfect mountain tool

By Kevin

from Pittsburgh, PA, USA

Comments about Black Diamond Raven Pro Ice Tool:

This thing is so light I often bring it even when I think a whippet alone will suffice. It also assume it is super strong too as I used a very similar previous version for many years and much abuse without ever feeling it wasn't capable of arresting a fall if arrest was possible. Basically, I always trust that this thing will not break. This cannot be said for some other axes I have used. Super light. I own the 55cm one only because the 50cm was sold out. I use it mostly as a ski mountaineering tool but also use it on rock approaches in the spring. Phenomenal axe. Light, strong, short and is perfect for my needs!

Tough as nails.

By Marcus

from Melbourne VIC, Australia

Comments about Black Diamond Raven Pro Ice Tool:

Very tough and useful piece of equipment. I use it mostly for backcountry touring. Handy for getting up and across a snow field, hacking out ice/snow in camp and when getting down a particularly steep slope. Very light so doesn't weigh down the pack or arms.

Lightweight Ice Tool

By TommyC

from Undisclosed

Comments about Black Diamond Raven Pro Ice Tool:

This is the ice tool to take when you don't really want to take an ice tool, basically when you are going rock climbing where there may be some hard snow to deal with on the way to or from the rock route. It's really light and will make an early morning approach, like you might find in the Bugaboos, much safer and less stressful. This is way better than grabbing a sharp rock or nut tool when you may need to self arrest.
