Small, works.

Comments about Black Diamond Orbit Lamp Closeout:

This is the really small version of Black Diamond's three small lanterns. The original version is the 4AA Apollo, which we used for several years, until the on/off button died. The Voyager is a newer AA lantern, which shrunk the Apollo to half size, added a bottom flashlight, and left off the feet, which raised the Apollo above your table. The Orbit is smaller yet, using 4AAAs. All are really good, with the Voyager and Orbit being just about perfect, differing only in size. Both of them have a bottom flashlight, which solves the usual problem of a dark circle under the lantern, and all of them go from bright to just barely on, by holding the button. I'm not sure how well they are weather resistant, but both are Highly Recommended.

Feature rich pocket rocket!

Comments about Black Diamond Orbit Lamp Closeout:

I'm very impressed with all of BD's lighting technology. I'm kind of a lighting geek so I've looked at many brands out there. I really like the interface their lights have. It is very intuitive. This little light has many great features that I feel set it apart from its competition. As I mentioned it is very compact which is awesome when space is a premium. It takes four AAA batteries instead of three. Many small lights skimp and only pack three batteries inside. This gives a shorter run time and the annoyance of using batteries in odd numbers. I take this light and the Storm headlamp as it runs on 4 AAA too. This way I'm relying on one type of battery in even numbers. I can charge 4 AAA Samsung eneloops on a solar charger in the day and have them ready that night. I also like how this light has the flood flashlight beam at the bottom. In the past I haven't taken lanterns camping because in the tent they don't illuminate what is directly under them well. This light solves that problem by having a mode where the flood light can be activated at the bottom with or without the lantern function. The beam is very diffused though so it really doesn't replace having a good flashlight or headlamp (the Storm) with you too.

Comments about Black Diamond Orbit Lamp Closeout:

Have tried about every mini lantern out there, this is the best. It just replaced another brand which had terrible shadows and an unreliable switch...the Orbit has NONE of these problems, the light is diffuse, no shadows from the lantern globe itself, and construction is solid. Perfect for reading in a tent, kitchen area cleanup, and even had enough power to illuminate a late night tent setup. The top slides up and down, which exposes the switch. It's really more of a control button, since it also controls dimming. It stands nicely on little rubber cushions, or hangs from a clever folding, two piece hook.
BDs specs say it'll run 10 hrs on high with AAAs, 24 hrs on low, and I've gotten at least that much with mine.
Sure, you don't need a lantern, but at just over 4 oz. with 4 lithium AAAs (uses any kind of AAA, lithiums just lighter and better in my Colorado cold), it's barely a problem to pack and can really "brighten" up a late night in camp.
This is a great piece of gear; BD could make it perfect if:
Turned off at any setting, it always turns on at the brightest setting. Overall, that's proven ok, but I would prefer it to "remember" it's last setting. The top is also a bit hard to "unstick" from it's open or closed position, but on the other hand it's solid once in place. And it sure would be easier on my battery supply if it used standard AAs, not AAAs, which I don't really keep around for anything else.(Note: There's an optional NRG2 rechargeable battery module available, but shops here don't have them yet)
The Orbit is the little sister of the Apollo, which is a better choice for larger groups and if weight is not an issue.
This is probably my favorite piece of recently purchased gear, it's truly worth it's price and weight. Highly Recommended, Best in Class.
