This is a fantastic headlamp in brightness, longevity and features. However I would make some small changes to it's design and operation. I'm a photographer, biker and skier and mountaineer living in Alaska. First, the good 1. Amazingly Bright with good light fall off on 4x led 2. Decent color temperature for 4x led 3. Uses 4 AA instead of 3AAA (easier to come by, far longer lasting, aa/aaa rechargeable packs only charge even numbers {have fun swapping out that third battery}) 4. Red led for night photography and dark sky enjoyment. 5. Single power 2 Led mode has fairly wide field of view, pretty nice light pattern. 6. Strobe, single power white and red modes only. What I'd change/add (as I didn't see a page for R&D feedback) 1. As in the arctic version, make all the battery packs detachable, with optional cord extensions. 2. Put Red led on back of battery pack for marker, strobe and traffic, fully adjustable, separate button. 3. Always start lamp in last mode and brightness used, fading up from zero, soft start. Going to full bright at 200 lumens is jarring and annoying to users, but mostly others. Plus it saves switching modes on every restart just to get back to where you had set it last time. 4. Reflective lettering on headband and all of battery back. 5. Strobe in 4x led mode 6. Multiple strobe patterns. fast, slow, fading, attention, sos. 7. Hard cut on 4x led beam pattern like car headlights. 8. Make Single power 2 led beam pattern wider. Perhaps add 2 additional white LEDs for wide 9. 3 white led (4x + 2wide 1x)mode for better peripheral vision 10. Battery cover/case latch mechanism is too weak a material for size. Demo unit at store was broken at that location. Observe and be careful, push cover in fully before attempting to latch closed. 11. Larger, more pronounced switch with stronger actuation click for gloved use. 12. Additional switch. Almost too many functions to assign to one switch, if these suggestions are implemented. 13. Select 5500kelvin leds only for 4x LED, or have model that does for photographers. Also consider 3200k or Foglight yellow as additional versions. 14. 3200k/2600k for single power leds for more comfortable camp lighting. Kelvin is color temperature, 5500k sunlight 2600k candlelight. 15 Wider lighting for red leds at an even lower angle, Most red use is close up. Strip led? 16. Allow headlamp to rotate 90degrees up, to light ceiling, igloo or tent and a few more degrees downwards as well. 17 Lower angle of 1x led's relative to 4x led, close up vs distance use. 18 Just have to say it again, PLEASE start light by fading in (soft start) from low on last mode used. Starting from lowest power will save users battery life since they will intentionally have to select more power, as opposed to choosing to save power by starting at full and then decreasing power. That is a fairly long list of changes/wants, but this is still the BEST headlamp I've ever owned. There are brighter, but not at (or near) this price or with this feature set. So go buy it, you won't be sorry.

I bought this light a few months ago. Everything was great until today. I put new batteries in it and the area on the battery case that has two slots to lock the top on broke. I treated this light like I treat my Zeiss camera lens. I didn't abuse it. The case has a design flaw. It's very plain to see. The area where the latch goes into the slot is too thin. There is nothing wrong with the way the light functions. Its the thin amount of plastic that is holding the battery top on. It's not strong enough to hold the pressure. I use my light daily. I always buy high quality equipment. I looked at how other headlamps were made and none of quality were made with this design. There is too little material to hold the lid on. If the case was made thicker at the top it would be much better. I would re-design the way the case opens & closes. Using a bolt with threads on it would work. The springs inside the case are putting pressure on the top. As you close the top the springs make it difficult to push the top down. As you turn the latch to close it you are pushing against the thin tooth pick like structure that holds the lid on. I'm not the only person that has discovered this flaw in the design. I majored in design and it's very plain to see the problem. Just make the top of the case taller or out of a material that can take the latch pushing up against the slot it is trying to go in with the pressure of the springs inside pushing up on the lid. The light itself is a wonderful light. I truly love the design and the functions of this light. If only the case was made stronger and of a material that wouldn't fall apart so easily. The case will have to be redesigned. I can't imagine having a light with a case that has a thin structure holding it together as this one has. Someone made a critical error when they let this go to manufacturing.

We prefer the old version

By Adam

from Northern CA

Comments about Black Diamond Icon Headlamp:

While the high setting put out some good lumens, I prefer the old version. The low setting on the new Icon is next to worthless where the old version was just right for working at night. Now we will most likely need to use the high beam and drain our batteries...as well as blind everyone around us. The incandescent high beam on the old version was brighter in a wider range of lighting conditions than the new model. These lamps are used by a 20 person Federal Hotshot crew, so rest assured we have put them through their paces. We will see how the new versions fare this year, but I have already received comments about the new one being inferior in lightning capacity. The old version was very durable, and from an appearance standpoint, the new version should be as well. Finally the new lamps require 4 batteries. Considering the lightning output is reduced, and all LED, I cannot imagine why. Not a big deal, but increased amperage would imply increased illumination. It does slightly increase the amount of weight on your head for hours at a time.

Comments about Black Diamond Icon Headlamp:

Great value, the batteries in the back help keep the front unit small if you can mount a camera. Also helps to counterweight camera. Plenty of options with dimming and red light. Can take some rough treatment and handles rain well.

By Charles

Comments about Black Diamond Icon Headlamp:

I work at night, so a strong dependable headlamp in essential. I use all the different light modes, regularly. The ICON has served me well. The price is great, other brands at the same cost don't compare. This is my 4th one over the years. I enjoy using it every night.

Lite, comfortable and easy to operate-very bright!

By Stephen

Comments about Black Diamond Icon Headlamp:

Use this mainly for hunting and kayak fishing, & camping. Have an older one as well and got this one to be able to use it in wet conditions. Plenty of light to pitch my tent or launch my kayak in the dark and plenty to spare.

Comments about Black Diamond Icon Headlamp:

I am a professional body modification practitioner. I bought this headlamp to be able to see clearly during procedures. The ability to adjust how much light it puts out is perfect dependent on area I'm working and for the comfort of my client, not being blinded while still allowing me to see what I need to see to work. Works phenomenally for my purpose, I went with the best reviewed product I could find and a great decision.

Ease of use & brigthness

Comments about Black Diamond Icon Headlamp:

Took my new ICON for a night walk. + easy to install, to adjust. It does give you plenty of light to see and to be seen. Comfortable over a Turtlefur. Delta:it takes some practice to move between the different settings. Maybe having a knob to control all settings would be easier?

Bright and comfortable

Comments about Black Diamond Icon Headlamp:

I moved to the ICON from a STORM. I was concerned about carrying the weight of the battery pack on my head but with two runs now under my belt with the ICON I have noted no issues. Light is very bright. Straps easily adjustable to maintain a snug fit and there is no movement of the light with running.
