Exactly what I needed!

By Charles

from Carver, Damascus, OR 97089, USA

Comments about Black Diamond 50 Caliber Backpack:

I wanted a cragging pack that would really carry what I bring without unnecessary extras. I tried three others but they didn't have room for a rack, rope and tarp, harness, food, 10 essentials, water, helmet, shoes...without strapping things to the outside. They also had tons of pockets and even pockets in pockets, which are just more places I needed to search to find something. But this is just right! The heavy duty bottom means it's not going to fall apart. I took it on a couple multi-pitch climbs; no worries about the adequacy of the handles or wear from abrasion, and, like I said no unnecessary straps or pockets.

Perfect fer th' craggin' days

By Carolyn

from Bishop, CA

Comments about Black Diamond 50 Caliber Backpack:

I wanted something a little roomier for those cragging days when we move quickly between routes and just need to be able to toss in gear without needing to pack too carefully. The fabric is thicker and sturdy, and the pack has a tough haul-bag bottom, so it can handle getting tossed on the ground and other generally rough treatment. It is heavier than BD's "backcountry" packs (Speed 55 et al) and does not carry all that well (a bit sloppy), so I don't use it on long approaches and/or routes where I'll be carrying the pack. I think BD has other packs that are better for this purpose. But on the whole this thing is roomy and bombproof - plenty of space for rope, water, helmet, lunch, layers, a couple pairs of shoes ... no need to strap stuff on the outside.

Great Hauler!

By Rick Dawson

from Monterey, CA, USA

Comments about Black Diamond 50 Caliber Backpack:

So far, I love this pack. I was able to stuff a double rack of c4/x4's .2 up to #3 plus a single #4, two 60m ropes, harness, shoes, chalk, snacks, light layer and headlamp in this puppy and it was pretty darn comfortable. If you need bells and whistles, look elsewhere. If you just need a rugged pack to haul gear around, this is it.

A comfortable classic for big trips...

By Paul

from Pennsylvania, USA

Comments about Black Diamond 50 Caliber Backpack:

The 50 Caliber is an awesome pack for mountaineering. While not the lightest or most sophisticated pack in that size range, it is exceptionally durable and offers unique usability features like the stand-up haul bag style bottom which is a wonderful thing when loading the pack and it stands up nicely when loaded. For me, the 50 Cal is too much pack to use as a crag pack, but it is perfect for longer trips, like the Grand Teton, where I used it a few weeks ago, and three or four day jaunts in the Alps. I tend to fill a pack regardless of the size so the 50 Cal keeps me down to a load that is much more managable, even when we push the capacity by adding a couple 3rd party accessory side pockets. It is practically bullet proof - unless you're actually shooting at it with a 50 cal - and seems like it would hold up reasonably well to light hauling. It carries very comfortably and I would definitely recommend this pack. It might be the perfect crag pack for a guide who normally carries more gear or extra ropes. In fact, it was recommended to me by a friend who is a climbing guide. The only con to this pack is that the compression straps are too far apart to fit 3rd party accessory pockets very well (and BD does not produce add on pockets for it).

A perfect climbing pack for those that actually use their gear and expect it to last! Fits all your camalots and other bulky trad climbing gear (or bolting gear ;) and carries very comfortably. The 'stand up' feature is really nice too......Great price.......great pack!
